Bio

I have lived long enough that no bio is brief. I have distinctly different chapters of lifetimes.

I love outside. I wish I lived in a tent all the time. I love to get better at surfing, because I'm not very good. I grew up sailing and I respect the wind. If it had been winter all the time in Colorado, I never would have thought of leaving. I used to be unafraid of jumping off very high things. I always want to run a long way. The best job of my whole life was being a bike messenger in Manhattan. Alligator season in Louisiana was one of my favorite parts of the year, at one point.

I immediately slipped into the water when my husband said, "Get in, it's either a mako or a whale shark." Some things just work out.

The one thing that holds true, the thing that keeps me sane and brings me back to me, is rowing the St. Lawrence skiff that my dad made.

My happiest moments, as a parent, are watching my children, at any age, swim underwater. If we are underwater, we have left the noise of everyone and everything, and we are simply us. Underwater, my children are true to themselves and beautiful and strong and swimming on their own.

Never underestimate geography.

Artist's Statement

I create work that is rooted in landscape. The spaces I present are places where a lot of hoping occurs. In a landscape that forces one to feel simultaneously big and small, the participant owns nothing, takes nothing, keeps nothing. My landscapes are definitions of what it means to be human, without the keeping of material or superficial objects or considerations.

I constantly question the notion of what is home. My images are always set in the present, and act as attempts to answer questions of fulfillment, contentment, purpose. The idea of keeping and hoping are tangled, and so becomes the bedrock of the content of my work.
